What is Tesla Hardware 3 (AI3)?
Tesla Hardware 3, also called the AI3 computer or the "Tesla FSD Computer," is the autonomous driving chip that powers Teslas built roughly between 2019 and mid-2023. It was a major leap forward when it launched — significantly more powerful than the older Hardware 2.5 computer it replaced. Tesla's CEO Elon Musk even promised, repeatedly, that HW3 vehicles would eventually support Full Self-Driving.
In Europe, the vast majority of Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles built before May 2023 are running HW3. That means millions of European Tesla owners are waiting to find out if their existing car will ever get FSD — or whether they've been left behind.
The short answer, as of early 2026, is that HW3 owners are not being abandoned. Tesla is actively developing FSD V14 Lite for AI3 hardware. But there are some important differences from the HW4 version of FSD.
HW3 vs HW4: The Key Differences
Hardware 3 (AI3)
- 72 TOPS (trillion operations/sec)
- Fitted: 2019–mid 2023
- Camera resolution: standard
- FSD support: V14 Lite (coming summer 2026)
- Feature set: Slightly reduced vs HW4
Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4)
- ~400+ TOPS
- Fitted: mid-2023–present
- Camera resolution: higher (5MP vs 1.2MP)
- FSD support: Full V14
- Feature set: Complete FSD Supervised
HW4 is roughly 4–5 times more powerful than HW3 in raw compute terms. It also benefits from higher-resolution cameras fitted during the same production refresh. This is why HW4 vehicles receive the full FSD V14 experience, while HW3 will receive a "Lite" version — still capable, but optimised for the hardware it runs on.
The key point: if you are buying a new Tesla in Europe today, you are getting HW4. All current Model 3 and Model Y vehicles shipped in 2024 and 2025 come with Hardware 4 as standard.
What is FSD V14 Lite?
FSD V14 is Tesla's latest generation of its Full Self-Driving Supervised software — the version that has been getting rave reviews in the United States, where it is already available on both HW3 and HW4 vehicles. In the US, HW3 Teslas already receive FSD V13 and early V14 builds.
In Europe, regulatory approval is still rolling out country by country. The Netherlands became the first EU country to approve FSD in early 2026, with other countries expected to follow throughout the year.
FSD V14 Lite for HW3 is essentially the same end-to-end neural net approach that makes FSD V14 impressive — the car drives itself using cameras only, with the neural network handling all decisions — but optimised to run efficiently on HW3's lower compute budget.
Based on the US experience, HW3 FSD performance is very close to HW4 in normal driving conditions. The main limitation is in edge cases requiring faster processing — complex multi-lane highway merges, for example — where HW4 may react slightly more smoothly.
Timeline: When is it Coming to Europe?
RDW (Dutch vehicle regulator) approved FSD Supervised in February 2026. Tesla is actively demonstrating FSD in Dutch city traffic. This is the EU's first domino.
FSD V14 has been silently pushed to German fleet vehicles in March 2026 via background OTA update. Regulatory framework under discussion. May see broader activation in Q2 2026.
The Irish government signed Level 2 autonomous vehicle legislation in March 2026. Ireland is now legally ready for FSD Supervised deployment.
According to signals from the Whole Mars Catalog tracker (March 9, 2026), Tesla is preparing a major software update specifically for AI3 hardware, targeted for late June 2026. FSD V14 Lite for HW3 is expected "this summer."
As country-by-country regulatory approvals accumulate, FSD for both HW3 and HW4 is expected to expand to France, Belgium, Sweden, Spain, and beyond throughout the second half of 2026.
The trajectory is clear: the EU is opening up to FSD. The question for HW3 owners is no longer "will it happen" but "when exactly."
How to Check Your Tesla's Hardware
Not sure which hardware your Tesla has? Here's the quickest way to find out:
- On your touchscreen, tap Controls (the car icon at the bottom left)
- Tap Software
- Scroll to Additional Vehicle Information
- Look for the "Autopilot computer" line
- "Tesla FSD Computer"
- "Hardware 3.0"
- "Hardware 4.0"
- "Autopilot Computer 4"
As a rough rule: Model 3 and Y built before May 2023 in Europe → HW3. Built from mid-2023 onwards → HW4. Model S and X: the transition happened slightly earlier. Older vehicles (pre-2019) may have HW2.5, which will not receive FSD.
Should You Buy FSD Now, or Wait?
This is the question thousands of European Tesla owners are asking. Here's an honest breakdown by situation:
I own an HW3 Tesla and already have FSD
Wait. V14 Lite is coming. You don't need to do anything. Once your country receives regulatory approval, the update will arrive via OTA.
I own an HW3 Tesla and don't have FSD yet
Monitor pricing. FSD in Europe is currently a one-time purchase. Tesla may switch to a subscription model (signs of this are appearing on Tesla's EU website). If you want FSD, buying now as a one-time purchase may be cheaper long-term than paying monthly subscriptions later.
I'm buying a new Tesla
You'll get HW4 automatically. No extra action needed. Consider adding FSD at purchase — and use a referral code to save €500 on your new Tesla first.
I'm deciding between new vs used Tesla
New = HW4 + longer FSD future. Used HW3 = cheaper, FSD V14 Lite coming. Both are valid in 2026. If FSD is important to you, a new Tesla with HW4 gives you the full feature set from day one.
The FSD Subscription Warning
One factor that could tip the decision: Tesla's EU website is showing early signs of a move towards monthly FSD subscriptions, mirroring the US market where Tesla already switched from one-time purchase to subscription-only. If Europe follows the same path, buying FSD as a one-time purchase now — while it is still available — locks in a lower total cost over time.
This is not confirmed yet, but it's worth watching. If you've been on the fence about buying FSD for your HW3 Tesla, 2026 may be the year to decide.
Save €500 on a New Tesla
If you're buying a new Tesla in Europe — which comes with HW4 and full FSD compatibility — you can save €500 in Supercharging credits by using a referral code before you order.
Use this code at tesla.com when ordering any new Model 3 or Model Y in Europe.
You get: up to 1,500 km of free Supercharging (valued at ~€500).
Use Referral Code →
The referral offer is available through March 31, 2026. After that date, the terms may change.
Bottom Line
If you have an HW3 (AI3) Tesla in Europe, you are not being left behind. Tesla is actively preparing FSD V14 Lite for your hardware, with a major AI3 software update targeted for late June 2026. FSD Supervised activation is expanding across Europe country by country — Netherlands first, Germany next, with broader EU availability expected throughout H2 2026.
If you're buying new, all current Teslas ship with Hardware 4. Use referral code carlo719460 to save €500 on your purchase.
